The Big Date

As many people are aware I have my first official date in about 5 years this past week. I thought that it went well. I had a great time, although I am a little worried that I had such a good time at someone elses expense. The guy that I went on the date with was very book smart, he wants to make aerospace part and is planning on getting a PhD. He is currently working on a double major in materials science and something that I can't remember. He is also in the honors program. My favorite parts about the date were how awkward he has and some of the things that he said and did. I think that for the first time in my life I was conversing with someone who said more things that made me think "Did he really just say that?" One might ask themselves what is so funny about that, well I am usually that person that people say that about. Many might be amazed to learn that I have accumulated a little tact over the years, but not enough to make a really noticeable difference. There are parts to the story that I will tell in person or on the phone, but I don't feel are publishable at this point in time. Needless to say I think that if he were to ask me out again that I would go. I had a really good time, even though the date was with a nerd.
I started clinicals again for school. I actually started them on my birthday, what a gift. The doctor that I am working with is great. I have a lot to learn, but I am still counting down to when I finish. Once again I am working three days a week at work and doing clinicals for three days, so it will be really nice when I finish the clinicals. When I go to work I work with a student for the next months. She is finishing her nursing school clinicals and I am finding out it is really difficult to have a student with me because I can finish everything faster and do it better. Poor doctors who have had to work with me.

Snow

Snow! Snow! Once again this morning it is snowing. I keep thinking that it just might start melting, but I am always wrong. Actually the snow in the yard is gone, just not in the mountains. It is snowing big flakes in the yard right now, but I am certain that it will melt shortly. I just have to go for my daily jog in the snow.

Trees

Today I had my first real experience as a Boy Scout. When I was in junior high all that I ever wanted to do was be a Boy Scout. They got to do all of the cool things and I got to hang out a young women activities...sewing quilts and doing "crafty" activities. I really wanted to be camping and bowling. Now that I have grown up I realize that all of the scouts are really just goofy and I appreciate being a girl.
Today I planted stakes for my brother, John's Eagle Scout project. They are planting trees for the Utah House, at Pond's Park. The project is to help people learn to plant trees that are the appropriate height under power lines, so that millions of dollars are not spent in cutting trees to prevent catastrophes. It was cold outside, but I enjoying planting stakes with plant names on them. The actual project is on Saturday, but I will not be able to attend since I work every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. Saturday will be a day of sleep for me. I love working on projects that help me feel like I am making a difference in the environment. Somewhere deep in my heart I really am a "tree hugger" although my efforts are not great in that area.

Feet

Today I am contemplating the importance of feet. I wish that I had thought about this concept when I was younger. Aren't little feet cute. Growing up I used to abuse my feet by not wearing any shoes, dancing (especially in my toe shoes), and running hundreds of miles on them. Not that I would have changed a lot of those activities, but that between the activities I should have been more gentle of them and taken care of them. These days I love a good pedicure...although I currently cannot afford for someone else to perform this little luxury.

What has brought me to this realization is that while trying to take care of my feet I have accumulated a closet full of shoes. I can only wear my shoes about 2-3 three months, so I have a pile-up of shoes. What do I do with all of these shoes? It seems a waste to just throw them away, but I cannot wear them anymore without having foot problems. Until I figure this out, maybe I will just have to work on entering the Guinness Book of World Records for most athlete shoes owned.

Salisbury Streak

My job leads to a lot of awkward and hilarious situations all tied into one. The weekend in the Emergency Room a girl came in after overdosing on something. She was belligerent and violent. She was making some of the other patients there a little nervous with her obscenities, but me I was quietly observing knowing that my assistance would be needed shortly. She picked me out of the crowd and decided that I needed to be told a few things. After belittling me about my weight she proceeded to tell me that my job was worthless and then I didn't help people no matter what I thought. She said "You think you are so cool with your 9 to 5 job".... (which I was there at 3 a.m., I didn't feel it was necessary to point this out at that moment)..."I bet you just go home and eat your Salisbury steak and watch reality t.v." At that time in the morning I though it was pretty funny. Then I thought, what is Salisbury steak? My coworkers and mother had to help me to come to the realization that it was a ground beef steak of sorts, typically in frozen dinners. I was a little sad when all of the slanders had to cease shortly after she jumped off the stretcher and was headed in my direction with both legs cuffed. The police and security in the hospital assisted us in placed her in 4-point restraints and a "spit hood." Then we knocked her our with a cocktail of tranquilizing medications. If only her mother were there, she would have been proud.
